Recently i had to write an essay for my University of creative arts application to determine whether or not i got an interview with them, well i got the interview.
The question we had to answer was '
You are deserted upon a desert island, if you could subscribe to one monthly publcation, which one would it be and why?'.
Well i decided to do a big plan and brainstrom ideas on my three choosen magazines, Love, Vogue and I-D.
This is what i came up with -
"I would Choose I - D because i believe in the words :
“Fashions fade, style is eternal.” - Yves Saint Laurent
From the age of 15, I have always been fascinated by the distinctive graphic cover of I - D, with the logo made to appear like a ‘winky’ face, since that age I have always tried to make it my task to buy each new cover.
I believe I-D encompasses the ideology that style is eternal and the fantasy of fashion, how by reading an article or looking at a page on clothes can whisk you away from whatever situation you may be in, you can imagine wearing the clothes and feeling glamorous or outlandish like some of the models and celebrities. In the pre fall 2010, 30th birthday issue, ‘Then, Now and Next’ was the theme throughout this issue, it had Lady Gaga on one cover wearing a black body suit and Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell upon the other two issues and all three are clearly shown sporting the iconic ‘wink’ which has been seen throughout the previous issues. Within this issue there were over 300 interviews with celebrities and iconic figures of our generation, I believe by I - D following this idea it highlighted their focus upon individualism and identity. It can give you brand new ideas to help boost your own style , even if you are stuck upon a desert island.
To be stuck upon a desert island I imagine, i would be very lonely and be isolated from the outside world, I would see this as being like Harry Potter and when he returns to his muggle(non- magical) family in the summer and his only communication to his friends and the magical world would be his owl. This would be very similar to my experience upon a desert island.
When I am relaxing upon the desert island or when I am fighting for survival, to see the pigeon post flying towards me would be a relief. Suddenly, I wouldn’t feel as alone as I did previously as the bird brings me my brand new copy of I - D, something that will fill my mind with creative ideas and I believe it would keep me up to date upon fashion, music, art and more importantly youth culture. By having this publication sent to me it would allow me to have a minute communication link with my own generation."
Peace out x
